Awards, Delays, Awkward Moments, and Baby Bits

by Fence

wake(Wake) – Sunday’s awards ceremony for Solrain’s Reconstruction Days Holiday held during a Tour of the Solrain Planets delivered some things mundane, some mildly interesting, and quite a few surprises.

  • The Tour/Ceremony was conducted by Soria Speaker Demeter Garreth, even though this year’s holiday organizational duties (and campaign kickoff for her reelection bid next year) fell to the Amanra Speaker Cassia Verhal. Spaceborne activities were implemented by Assistant Tmolus Shaen of the STCC’s Cornea based Pilot Liaison Office. The tour began at Wake, flew through Cornea, and ended at Sol Core. Our dirtside sources on Amanra have hinted that Speaker Verhal was displeased that none of the pilot activities took place around her home planet.
  • As part of the ongoing Factional/TRI awards system cleanup effort, a new set of competitive event medals (Cesium, Platinum, and Antimony Medals for 1st/2nd/3rd), and a new participation badge (Captain’s Commendation, named for frequent event organizer CaptainCow) were not yet available for distribution. Director of Public Relations for TRI-Corp, Elle Rodan, said “VVe had some unexpected technicae issues. Please have patience! All vvill be made effectua soon.”
  • The following pilots will receive a Captain’s Commendation badge for participation over the weekend: Askume, Canuck, Elayne, hifly, FFK_Masssa, Filzi, Joker_GdI, MM_Massa, Narada, PodRider1, Radar, RedDwarf, Rosberg, Saroel, ShapeShift, and Sweithek.
  • Friday’s short track shuttle race, held in Wake sector, had the following results: Cesium to Rosberg (squad Q-Racing), Platinum to Filzi (Unbreakable), Antimony to Radar (=ACME=)
  • Friday’s station debris photo lottery: Narrow Canal to Radar (=ACME=); Outer Ring to PodRider1 (=ACME=).
    • Narrow Canal debris was confirmed to be fragments of Soria’s old Bravo Class orbital station, catastrophically destroyed in 416 BT by experiments based on Samons’ jump research.
    • Outer Ring debris was confirmed to be fragments of the Quantar Trade Depot destroyed by Hyperial in the Second GVB War, 86 AT.
  • Saturday’s DSS Decryption Contest was won by Narada (Q-Mining PLC) who at the time of awards had the only contest entries earning him the entire purse. Askume (Kraken Guard) turned in late but fully restored translation of DSS #3. Both pilots were awarded the Seeker of Knowledge medal, and their work can be found in the comments section here. These decryptions may well have important implications. [Editor’s note: readers may rest assured that UUNN will be following up with experts in the related fields…for discs 1 and 2. The Baby Bits recipe bears no further investigation.]
  • The Solrain Star was awarded to unsquadded pilot Elayne. Speaker Garreth received an updated awards list inflight from the office of STCC Premier Cristofore Parce that also included a Solrain Star for pilot -Dean- of SOL NAVY. Garreth had obvious difficulty giving the award to a member of the squad that as she said, “nearly cost [her] the election” and implied a political motivation behind the award.
  • The “loop” of Faction Missions begun on at the start of the weekend have crept along at a pace that can only be called glacial, considering the strong payout. The Solrain sponsored Hyperial FM has outpaced the faction’s own Sol Core mission by a near 2:1 margin, breaking the “loop” theory, which is no doubt another embarrassment for the office of Pilot Liaison.

Garreth Wins Tenth Term!

UUNN Newswire

(Soria) – Demeter Garreth has proven victorious in her tenth bid for the Speakership of Soria. Final election returns show a narrow margin of victory over a vigorous challenge from Mayor Tebbor Rivik of New Yigo Archipelago. Mayor Rivik reportedly called to congratulate Speaker Garreth early this morning, putting to rest all rumors of a potential legal challenge to the ballot tallies.

Many will remember Garreth’s campaign kick off speech made during AT 114’s Reconstruction Days holiday, when she fulfilled a campaign promise from the 112 cycle to become a jump pilot herself. Pundits doubted her chances for re-election since she can no longer campaign planetside in person, and in fact she had taken a downturn in recent polls owing in part to her hardline stance against the jump squad SOL NAVY who’s actions precipitated the current state of War with Octavius.

Garreth credits the victory to her longstanding profitable record, her ability to remain connected to her constituency, and to Roober Swain, her campaign manager and long time chief of staff, who successfully ran her campaign’s “ground game” once again (though more literally this time) getting her message out to the voters.

Garreth Down in Polls

Sol-1by Fence

(Soria) – This year seemed like it was going to be one of the easier reelection bids for Soria Speaker Demeter Garreth. With a month to go, she sat on a comfortable 16-18 point lead in most polls. That is until the controversy surrounding the Speaker’s comments regarding squad SOL NAVY and their part in the assassination of Clements IV of Ares Prime. This firestorm has corresponded with her recent dip in the polls. Most pollsters have her trailing slightly, but still within the margin of error.

Speaker Garreth’s challenger is Tebbor Rivik, the sitting Mayor of New Yigo Archipelago. Mayor Rivik has made political hay with one-liners such as “The self-styled ‘Speaker for the Pilots’ should be supporting SOL NAVY rather than taking them to task for attacking the enemies of Solrain.” Likewise, recent comments by STCC Premier Christofore Parce have been less than supportive.

However, adversity on the election trail is nothing new to the perennial incumbent. Since her first election in AT 85, the Speaker has rather notoriously rallied in the eleventh hour. Classic examples of this include the AT 102 special election — when the 4 Speakerships of Solrain were consolidated to 3 — in which Garreth edged out another incumbent, Tmolus Merva, after trailing by a few points when polling places opened their doors. And as recently as the election cycle of 112 AT, the Speaker was down a dozen points with a week to go. Her campaign promise to become a jump pilot is widely believed to have saved her 3 years ago. But with Solrain Election Day quickly approaching (always the Sunday just preceding The Reconstruction Days holiday), it will be interesting to see what–if anything–can save her campaign this time.

Solrain Rushes to Rebuild After Naval Yard Attack

By Thane Carios

(Solrain Core) The STCC acted quickly in organizing a Faction Mission to rebuild the Barracuda bomber manufacturing facility after it was destroyed yesterday by a trio of Octavius pilots in retalliation for the assassination of Emperor Clements IV.

“We were caught with our pants down,” said STCC Premier Christofore Parce. “I think we got a little over-sure of ourselves after SOL NAVY was able to so easily dominate Octavius. We need them to show a little more of that now.”

One STCC insider said, “Looks like Miss D (Speaker Demeter Garreth) has a little egg on her face after the Premier came out and basically called on SOL NAVY for help. It will be interesting to see how that plays in the upcoming election.”

As yet, there has been no progress on this mission.

SOL NAVY Assassination Attempt

by Fence

(Octavius Core) This first picture says it all:

While we are still trying to uncover details of the situation, there was definitely a coordinated attempt on the life of Emperor Clements IV earlier today. As yet, there is no official word from Ares Prime, but persons on the scene reported that the pod retrieval sequence at Oct Core station was not of the typical variety that the station sees on a daily basis.

In the minutes leading up to the planned opening speech for the Recitation of Heroes (part of this year’s Feast of the Fallen which was hosted by Clements) it was noted that nearly all of Oct space’s beacons were tuned blue.

When the Emperor flew up to Oct Core from Ares Prime unescorted, he was immediately attacked by Solrain Military members Mendax and polytope of squad SOL NAVY. Though he evaded for a few minutes, no one loyal to Octavius was present to assist him. The lack of Octavian support certainly seemed curious, as did the Emperor’s instance in approaching the unfriendly scene outside Oct Core.

Another member of SOL NAVY, pilot entrope claimed on f5:chat that it was indeed a bona fide assassination attempt.

Emperor Cineon of Cinatus, last year’s event host, was quick to condemn the attack and promised a diplomatic outreach to the STCC.

The Solrain Military system immediately slapped polytope with demerits per the standing TRI/Factional Military rules of engagement of civilians by MT tagged craft, and the Octavian Faction reduced both pilots Oct PR to -125, thus forcibly changing their ship registry to Pirate.

Note that the squad SOL NAVY is fairly new to TRI space, and is not related to traditional Solrain factionalists -Sol- Navy, founded by Pyldrvr.
