(UUNN HQ) The polls are now open for Citizens of Solrain to elect a new Speaker for the planet Amanra.
The incumbent, Lylian Whyte, was an upset winner when she defeated five-term Speaker Cassia Verhall in a run-off. She now faces challengers Sagrith Hubri, TRI Corp Director of Manufacturing, Mercantile & Economics; and Vivian Duvazaco who has held a number of senior leadership roles at Tens & Piney and is currently T&P’s Alignment-Leveraging Strategy Czar. Both experienced, well-known corporate power-brokers.
Only citizens of Solrain may vote and you may vote just once. Polls close at the end of the day on 120.7.5.
Well I went on holiday … and I stayed a lot longer than expected. But my mom finally kicked me out so I’m back with another UPDATE!
Pilots Stay Away in Droves The holiday crowds were in stealth-mode for this year’s Reconstruction Days with minimal participation in the organized events (“minimal” is a generous term here). Some blame was put on the numerous protests of the recent Speaker’s election but it’s hard to believe that was the sole reason. I really liked the “What’s Your Story” contest about The Henge. I guess I should have entered. I would have WON. (My theory is that it was a VERY ancient, VERY huge trampoline.)
Well the recent Solrain election for the Speaker’s Chair for Amanra was a landmark in a number of ways. A long-time incumbent was unseated. TWO challengers ended up tie in the popular vote, forcing a runoff in the STCC – which has not happened in a long time. Supporters of Verhal have hit the streets in droves, with protests in boroughs and cities across all three planets. While there has been no violence, there’s been unrest-a-plenty. Protesters have contended that Hyperial was instrumental in influencing the election. Continue reading →
(Alexios, Amanra) Close elections always trigger strong emotions, and the recent Speaker’s election for Amanra was as close as it can get with the popular vote resulting in a tie, forcing the 100 members of the Solrain Citizens and Traders Council (STCC) to break the tie with a vote. But this election was also was overshadowed by claims that Hyperial hackers tried to sway the presidential election.
Millions of Amanrans signed an online petition stating that Ms. Whyte was unfit for the Speaker’s Chair, while anti-Whyte protesters gathered at cities across the planet.
In Alexios, more than 10,000 demonstrators braved unusually cold temperatures, chanting: “Whyte’s Not Right!”
In Arestol, protesters beat drums and waved signs saying: “Don’t let Hyperial Run Our Planet.”
On the campus of Sutonia University, hundreds of student-demonstrators cried.
We attempted to contact the incumbent Speaker, Cassia Verhal, but her spokesperson said she was not ready to make a statement at this time.
(Alexios, Amanra) The STCC has announced the results of the Speaker’s Chair for Amanra and it is long-time Council-member Lylian Whyte. The upset began when Whyte and co-challenger Daneel Ruyden both tallied 37.5% of the popular vote, ending the five-term, 15-year run for Cassia Verhal — who was largely considered the most progressive force in Solrain politics.
A 30-year veteran of the Council, ‘Lyl’ Whyte had tried to unseat Verhal three times without success. She is a long-time member of the council and close personal friend of Demeter Garreth. Her political views are extremely conservative and her fiscal positions are “traditional.”
(Cornea Station) With just three days to go before the polls close, the STCC says that the election is one of the closest three-way contests it’s seen in years, with the challengers in a dead heat, and the incumbent trailing by about 12%.
If the early results hold true, it will be a shocking defeat for Speaker Verhal and her Progressive Party. Clearly she is hoping for a big late turnout.
